A very good, suspenseful mystery that holds the interest until the last (very memorable)sequence.
#Il gatto a nove code 1971 movie
This movie is more controlled andconventional but still features some spectacular murders and has enoughArgento touches to make it an above average giallo thriller. themessy and downright silly 'Phenomena'. As much as Ienjoy Argento's later surrealism he sometimes just goes too far e.g. The plot, though convoluted at times, actually makes sense, and thereis a bit more character development that you normally expect. I'm assuming that the American version is botched and thatis the version most people have seen. This movie isn't as flamboyant and eccentric as most of Argento's laterwork. LUccello Dalle Piume Di Cristallo was the first of the Argento Animal Trilogy, followed by Il Gatto a Nove Code (The Cat o Nine Tails, 1971) and 4 Mosche di Velluto Grigio (Four Flies on Grey Velvet,1972), all aided by wonderful scores of the composer. I think this might be a factor in myreaction to it. I must point out that I watched the uncut, undubbed original Italian version.

I expected the worst from 'The Cat O'Nine Tales' because of its generallypoor critical standing, but was pleasantly surprised by this intriguing andeffective murder mystery. Definitely a must for any Argento fan and, I think, agood recommendation for anyone looking for a unusualEuro-Horror-Thriller. But on the flip side,'CatO' Nine Tails' is exceedingly better than so many other 'giallo' films ofthat era or any era. This being Argento's second film asdirector, it's perhaps true that he does not achieve the delirious highsandawe inspiring beauty of some of his later films. She, to me, represents the kind offemale character that Hitchcock was so good at bringing out of hisactresses she is a virtual blank slate upon which the director (in thiscase Argento) projects what he wants. I think Catherine Spaak makes a great leading lady with heraloof beauty and non-acting presence. Karl Malden isterriblysweet and thoroughly convincing as the blind man Arno and James Franciscusis handsome and cool (almost too cool) as the reporter with whom hecollaborates. The film is filled with typicallyArgento-esque odd, eccentric characters and bit players and the atmospherecreated is one of true unease and hidden perversion. There are some gorgeous setpieceshere and some truly striking sequences (the cemetery scene and the carchaseare my two particular favorites). It'sbeautifully photographed (as usual) and makes lovely use of the widescreenfilmscape, it has a great Ennio Morricone musical score and it reallydisplays the first true signs of Argento's unique 'ultra-style' andtechnique for which he is now so beloved. Fatti misteriosi accadono in un centro scientifico dove si studiano la genetica e l’ereditarietà . Sure, 'Cat O' Nine Tails'(1971) is not an Argento 'masterpiece' (depending what one's criteria are)and is certainly not a perfect film, but the 'good stuff' in this babyjustoutweighs whatever it's faults may be, as far as I'm concerned. Giallo DVDRip Attori: Un film di Dario Argento con Rada Rassimov, Tino Carraro, James Franciscus, Catherine Spaak. I personally love this movie and I'm a shameless admirer of Dario Argento,so take my comments as worth a grain of salt.
